4 Ways a Child Custody Lawyer Will Fight for You

Going through a divorce isn't easy for anyone. When you're fighting over child custody and support, it can be even more stressful. However, picking the right lawyer can ensure that your needs and rights will be considered. These are some ways your child custody lawyer fights for your cause.

1. Evidence Collection

Regardless of how many ways you've been a good parent in the past, you have to prove that in the eyes of a mediator or judge. Your child custody lawyer will take care of gathering any evidence on your behalf that can show your parenting in a positive light. They’ll call witnesses who can testify on your behalf. Some of those witnesses may be family, friends, neighbors, school administrators, medical professionals, etc.

2. Skillful Negotiation

A good lawyer understands the art of negotiation. If you're lucky, their negotiation skills can prevent you from having to go into a courtroom. According to Legal Jobs, 90% of custody agreements don't have to go in front of a court judge due to settlements.

3. Court Representation

Unfortunately, some cases are simply too contentious for closed-door mediation. If a couple can't come to terms, they have to handle things in a court of law. When your custody dispute comes under the ruling of a judge, your child custody lawyer will represent you. They’ll present their gathered evidence, argue on your behalf, speak to your spouse's lawyer, and make motions to the judge. In addition, your lawyer can give you a realistic outlook on what they can expect from your case based on the evidence presented so far.

4. Emotional Support

As your lawyer fights for your custody rights, you can also rely on them to help fight to keep your emotions together. After all, a custody battle can be a strain on the parent and children. Luckily, lawyers have experience dealing with the emotional roller coaster that can come with such a situation. They can give you helpful advice and be a compassionate ear when needed. If you need additional support services, they can provide reputable referrals you can consider.

A trained and experienced professional will fight for your rights until the end. Whether negotiating a settlement during the mediation hearing, representing you in court, or helping you manage your emotions, your
child custody lawyer will fight for you in more ways than one. For an experienced attorney who has handled these types of family law cases, contact us at the Law Office of Arthur J. White III, P.C. for a consultation.

If you are subject to a standard possession order, Father’s Day weekend will be very important for you. Here’s why: In standard possession orders, the father is entitled to possession of the child on Father’s Day weekend. This year, Father’s Day weekend is the second Friday of June. That means fathers with standard possession orders will get four (4) weekends in a row. To break up this time, mothers will have to make a timely – and specific – designation. Have you made your summer possession designations? Remember, all non-custodial parents, get to designate periods of extended summer possession for your children. The deadline is April 1st. If you don't, your default summer possession will be July 1st thru July 31st (if your order contains a Standard Possession Order). For the custodial parent, you have certain times set out for you for summer possession, as well. If you give the non-custodial parent notice by April 15th you can designate one weekend inside their thirty-day period of extended summer possession to have the children. If you do not designate this weekend by April 15 th , then you lose that weekend. Contact me so that I can help you navigate these difficult issues.

If you are subject to a standard possession order, the next few weeks are very important for you. Here’s why: In standard possession orders, Spring Break is divided out as even and odd years. So, if you are the primary parent, you typically have even Spring Break possession. Because Spring Break falls in an even year this year, the primary parent would have possession of the child beginning at 6:00 p.m. on the day school ends and continuing until 6:00 p.m. on the day before school resumes from the break. Do you know your holiday schedules or need them modified? Contact me so that I can help you navigate these difficult issues.
