Don’t Jeopardize Your Divorce, Hire a Divorce Lawyer

Learn why hiring a divorce lawyer is the best way to help yourself when you're considering divorce.

Adults aged 50 and older who have not been married are more apt to say they do not want to be married compared to adults younger than 50 who have not been married. That’s a 32% versus 11% ratio. It’s interesting that those age groups vary in thought. Divorce could be the culprit. Per the CDC, there have been over 800,000 divorces since 2014. That number has only climbed higher through the years to the present date.

Simply put, divorce is awful, stressful, and full of confusing paperwork. The good news is that it does not have to be. It is a tough and unfortunate decision. However, there are a few things you can do to help yourself when considering divorce.

You Won’t Get Special Treatment for Representing Yourself

Before you decide to represent yourself during a divorce, consider a few things. First, you are more than likely not educated or familiar with family court or matrimonial law. Judges, while fairly patient, will not give you any special treatment for not having knowledge of the law. You will be held to the same standards as other lawyers, especially the one representing your soon-to-be ex-spouse.

Do you know which documents you necessitate? Do you know what to do with those documents? If you show up in court without the proper documents filed, you’re only testing the patience of the judge. It could easily reach a breaking point which is not good for you. An annoyed judge is a less sympathetic judge.

A divorce lawyer is an expert when it comes to knowing what needs to be stated when making a case seem more reasonable than your opponent’s case. A lawyer that focuses on family law exclusively understands how to best prepare to face the court and your spouse’s attorney. They fully comprehend the divorce process, state laws, and the subtle nuances of the courtroom. Trying to represent yourself only jeopardizes your case.

You Need a Divorce Lawyer to Guide You

Going through a divorce can make even the most put-together people feel nervous and upset. Can you say that you would have the mental capacity to file a divorce petition correctly? Are you sure you will receive the financial outcome you feel you deserve?

Divorce lawyer services offered by a caring and compassionate divorce lawyer are meant to guide you through the entire process. You can depend on their law office to handle every detail for you. Your lawyer will fully explain the process from the very first steps through all of the paperwork to your final day in court. With a higher education behind them, a divorce lawyer has the knowledge required to cover everything.

Avoid Mistakes in a Complicated Legal System

This is more than likely a difficult time in your life and it may be hard to think clearly. It doesn’t help that the legal system is very complicated. That’s why hiring a divorce lawyer ensures your case is handled properly when it comes to circumventing costly mistakes. They are astute at avoiding mistakes when you are 100% upfront and honest with them.

Delays Happen If You Go to Court Without Legal Representation

If you go to court without a lawyer, you could experience delays. Those delays come in the form of mistakes with documents as well as other factors. It is quite frustrating and costly if you have to go back to court numerous times.

Those types of risks are eliminated when you hire a lawyer. Cutting corners to try to save money can cost you more in the long run. Your divorce lawyer is there to make sure everything is executed perfectly so delays are avoided and your divorce happens quickly.

If you are subject to a standard possession order, Father’s Day weekend will be very important for you. Here’s why: In standard possession orders, the father is entitled to possession of the child on Father’s Day weekend. This year, Father’s Day weekend is the second Friday of June. That means fathers with standard possession orders will get four (4) weekends in a row. To break up this time, mothers will have to make a timely – and specific – designation. If you are subject to a standard possession order, the next few weeks are very important for you. Here’s why: In standard possession orders, Spring Break is divided out as even and odd years. So, if you are the primary parent, you typically have even Spring Break possession. Because Spring Break falls in an even year this year, the primary parent would have possession of the child beginning at 6:00 p.m. on the day school ends and continuing until 6:00 p.m. on the day before school resumes from the break.
