The Top 3 Traits Any Good Divorce Lawyer Must Have

If your potential lawyer -- or their law offices -- doesn't possess these traits, then keep looking.

These days, 48% of marriages end by the 20-year mark. If that happens to your marriage, you need to make sure you're researching the right law office and hiring the right divorce lawyer to represent you.

Hiring a divorce lawyer may be one of the hardest and most important decisions you'll make. That's why it's crucial to hire the right lawyer. If your divorce lawyer has these three traits, you know you're in good hands.

They're a Good Communicator

A divorce lawyer must be able to effectively communicate, via public speaking and the written word. They must clearly identify what their client's needs are, and communicate those needs in the courtroom and in important legal documents. Even the slightest miscommunication from a lawyer could spell disaster for a client, especially during a divorce. That's why it's crucial that divorce lawyers constantly fine-tune their communication skills.

They're a Master Negotiator

Any lawyer that works in a law office should have excellent negotiation skills, but it's incredibly important that a divorce lawyer truly masters this skill. Effectively and fairly negotiating who gets what in a divorce is one of the main reasons clients seek lawyer services in the first place. If a divorce lawyer can't get what their client needs, then that client may look for representation from another law office (which NO lawyer or law office wants).

They Never Give Up

When someone reaches out to a law office for divorce lawyer services, they know they're about to go through a complicated, and possibly lengthy, process. That's why they're seeking help in the first place.

A good divorce lawyer does not give up on their client and perseveres through the proceedings. If a divorce lawyer gets knocked down, they don't stay down for long. They come up with creative strategies to combat whatever blow came their way.

Divorce lawyers know that their reputation, as well as the reputation of the law office they work for, is on the line whenever they are hired. They are expected to deliver the results their client wants, and they should do whatever they can to get those results.

If you're looking for a divorce lawyer, remember these three important traits: communication, negotiation, and perseverance. If your potential lawyer doesn't possess these traits, then keep looking.

Have you made your summer possession designations? Remember, all non-custodial parents, get to designate periods of extended summer possession for your children. The deadline is April 1st. If you don't, your default summer possession will be July 1st thru July 31st (if your order contains a Standard Possession Order). For the custodial parent, you have certain times set out for you for summer possession, as well. If you give the non-custodial parent notice by April 15th you can designate one weekend inside their thirty-day period of extended summer possession to have the children. If you do not designate this weekend by April 15 th , then you lose that weekend. Contact me so that I can help you navigate these difficult issues.

If you are subject to a standard possession order, the next few weeks are very important for you. Here’s why: In standard possession orders, Spring Break is divided out as even and odd years. So, if you are the primary parent, you typically have even Spring Break possession. Because Spring Break falls in an even year this year, the primary parent would have possession of the child beginning at 6:00 p.m. on the day school ends and continuing until 6:00 p.m. on the day before school resumes from the break. Do you know your holiday schedules or need them modified? Contact me so that I can help you navigate these difficult issues.
